What Are ENERGY STAR® Rated Windows?
When replacement windows are referred to as being ENERGY STAR® rated, it means that they have been manufactured by a designated ENERGY STAR® Partner. ENERGY STAR® rated windows have been independently tested, certified, and verified by the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) to meet or exceed strict energy efficiency standards established by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Because we live in a world where energy efficiency is a growing concern, most replacement windows that are manufactured nowadays are ENERGY STAR® rated, regardless of whether they are intended for residential or commercial construction. However, ENERGY STAR® ratings can vary from region to region.
For example, in a Southern climate zone — such as Mississippi — a replacement window needs to have a U-factor of less than or equal to 0.30 in order to be considered ENERGY STAR® rated. In a Northern climate zone – such as Alaska – a replacement window needs to have a U-factor of less than or equal to 0.27 to be deemed ENERGY STAR® rated.
Nowadays, the federal government offers tax credits as incentives to encourage homeowners to install ENERGY STAR® rated windows. However, because there are so many stipulations associated with these tax credits, homeowners should thoroughly research them before investing in ENERGY STAR® windows.
