| Q.
Why do I need gutters?
A. Gutters are needed to protect your home from
water. They divert water away from the foundation preventing basement
leaks and ice forming on sidewalks and driveways. This will help prevent
accidents and lawsuits! |
The best gutter system
will have 5" .032 seamless gutters. Here's why:
Gutters come in K and U shape. The K style is more popular and more available. |
The gutter can have 4-inch, 5-inch or 6-inch channel. Typically a 5-inch
channel is most common in residential use because it holds enough water
capacity. |
.032 refers to the thickness of the gutter. While .032 is premium and
the best for your gutter system to prevent weeping and denting. .027,
.025, and .019 are also available. The .032 aluminum is best because
it is less likely to dent. |
All gutters are either sectional or seamless. Sectional gutters are sold
piece by piece and can sometimes leak through the seams. Seamless gutters
are preferable, as they will never leak because they have less seams.
They only have connection points at inside and outside corners and where
the downspouts are. |
Q. How do I maintain
my gutters?
A. Maintain your gutters by keeping
them clean. Removing debris on a regular basis
will allow water, snow, and ice to flow freely minimizing the chance
for ice dams and overflowing. A clogged gutter can overflow causing your
foundation to leak, possibly even flooding your basement.

Ask
if your contractor offers Leafproof, or something equivalent. Leafproof
helps with gutter maintenance because it's made to withstand the most
rainfall ever recorded, which is 12 inches in 1 hour. A shield is installed
at a 5 to 15 degree angle so the water slows and has time to collect.
This creates a waterfall effect, the water flows down and backwards into
the gutter and the debris flows off. |

| Q.How
can I make sure I get the most from my gutter system?
A. Having an optimal gutter system is key in preventing damage to
your home and lawn. Ask about 3x4 downspouts. They handle twice as much
water as 2x3 downspouts, and are less likely to clog. Also ask about Big
Mouth Outlets. Big Mouth Outlets open the bottom of the gutter up to 7"
also reducing clogging. Adding 2'-4' flip up extension to your gutter
system will divert water away from your foundation, and are convenient
for mowing and landscaping.
If you currently have
flip ups and find the screws often come out, ask for Snaplocks. The SnapLOCK
is made of aluminum and the washer is made of nylon for an extended life. |
